There are a couple of things you can do to try and gauge how authoritative (scholarly) an author is:

  1. Try the Cited Reference Search in Web of Science to look up a particular article or author and find out how many times they’ve been cited
  2. Check Ulrichsweb to see if the journal that they’ve published in is refereed (peer-reviewed)
