By "primary", do you mean studies with data?
The best place to begin your search is in the Communication Library Guide. Click on the "Online Resources" tab and choose one of the Core communication databases by clicking on the name of the database ("Communication & Mass Media Complete" is a good place to start).
Search for your topic and add a key word such as empirical, hypothesis, research design, methodology, interviews, etc. Limit your results to scholarly journals and check out the article abstracts to see if the material you've found is relevant. Click on Find It if the database doesn't have the full-text of the article.
You can also try a search in the "Dissertations and Theses" database. You'll find that database under the "More" subheading on the Online Resources tab of the Communication Library Guide.
